Ask The Makeup Diva Welcome to Ask The Makeup Diva! Our resident expert, The Makeup Diva, answers makeup and skin care questions sent in by readers just like you.
Q: I have normal-to-dry skin that is also sensitive and very reactive, getting blotchy or breaking out with no warning. Can you recommend that might help?
A: So often the problems we experience with our skin are related to the products we use on it. Before you buy anything new, try cutting back to a minimal routine with the products you are currently using. There might be a harsh toner or stripping cleanser that's causing your skin to react, and by removing that element, you may be on your way to less sensitive skin. Try a simple routine of a gentle cleanser, alcohol and irritant free toner (if you feel you need a toner), and moisturizer for several weeks, then add in any other products, like AHAs or other treatments, gradually and only as you need them. To avoid problems in the future, learn about product ingredients and if there is anything that consistently bothers your skin. There is a great list of acne-causing ingredients to avoid at http://www.zerozits.com/article6.shtml#inglist. I also recommend that you maintain a gentle skin care routine, avoid hot or even overly warm water for washing, avoid picking at pimples, go easy on scrubs and masks, and clean makeup brushes and sponges regularly. Here are some skin care products that I recommend for your skin type.
Cleansers: Tony & Tina Herbal Cleanser, Naturopathica
Toners: BeneFit Azulene Toner
Moisturizers: Peter Thomas Roth Environmental Repair Hydrating Gel,
